The Runt of the Litter

A few of you have been so kind to ask about my garden. Well, let me tell ya.

My good friend and neighbor, Renee, and I set out to do this together. We used the same book, we built the same structures, we even went to the same gardening center (together, on the same day) to buy our plants. We have the same results, right? Oh, no.

Here's hers:

And here's mine:

It looks just like it did 2 months ago!! Why the difference? Rule #1 -- never, NEVER take a short-cut on your soil. I did.

As I have joked with Renee, it's like we picked two puppies from the same litter. Hers is cute and thriving and house-broken.....and mine is full of worms.

On a better note, the pumpkin seeds that Joshua randomly poked into a random barrel of random soil are doing just smashing! Whew.

By the way, thanks Renee, for letting me sneak into your yard and take pictures. You're a GREAT gardener!

It's not too late! Pull out the underperforming plants, dig in some compost, and plant some things for autumn/winter. Beans will do well right now, and you can get a nice crop of broccoli or cauliflower going (note:these need lots of manure/fertilizer/good soil).

Leafy greens stay well into the autumn, as do leeks. Potatoes are impossible to get wrong, and you can plant a 120 day maincrop spud through your whole little plot for homemade, homegrown french fries! Don't despair, just add compost or manure and you will have a great autumn harvest to go with the pumpkins. Love ya! Carolyn
